Pro's and Con's to Building an Internet Consulting Business

So I am starting to ask folks what they think are some Pro's and Con's in starting an internet consulting business as that is one business I am contemplating. The reason I am asking people first instead of doing the list first myself is that I want to see what they have to say as I am going to be serving their needs.

My friend Andrew had this to say

Pro's

  • world wide clients
  • inexpensive to start,run and maintain
  • can be profitable once people see you as a trusted person

Con's

  1. need to specialize
  2. difficulty finding clients at first
  3. verification of oneself and clients
  4. online clients hard to find due to "noise" on the internet
  5. finding people to help get the word out
I can see the "noise" on the internet there is always that next big "guru" trying to sell you some magic pill to get you more money. I am not that person.

I am a lather, rinse, repeat person when it comes to learning and teaching.

Getting the word out well that is tricky for any business that you go into. You have to be creative in getting people to notice that your there. What has worked for me is social networking via Skype, the various Ning groups I belong to and the networking chatrooms I come across.

Now of course there is Twitter, Facebook, LinkdIn, Small Business Networks, to name more ways to get your name out there. The fact is you have to do the work to get your name out there and if you aren't willing to do the work than ultimately you have no one to blame but yourself for not doing as well in your business as you had hoped to.

Oh yeah did I mention I am blunt. I will tell you what you need to hear not what you want to hear.
