My Widget at Entrecard get's some attention, but not good attention.

Over at Entrecard Xploited I received a dishonorable mention about my widget design looks like I got top mention in graphic design. Ok not something to brag about but I just thought it was interesting that someone actually took the time to include me in an Entrecard write up. Here is what they had to say.

For the people who are listed in the Graphic Design category, there is no excuse for the following widgets:

Wildhearts Works

You can read more about what a few others had to say about it in the comments.

So what did I learn about this little trek into where my blog is being marketed and mentioned. One it pays to monitor your blogs activities not only promoted by you but others as well by doing a Google search. Two you should be doing this every week if you want to keep a high quality blog no matter what your niche is.

The only thing that bothers me about this post is that he could have mentioned what the two blogs he pin pointed could be doing better instead of just saying there is no excue for this. I have to say in my defense I am continually learning how to use my programs and a lot is trial and error. Some times I get lucky and sometimes I don't and ever so often I amaze myself. We are not perfect by any stretch. I am a work in progress and try hard to learn from my mistakes.

I take criticism with grace and use it to make myself better.

Good for you Joe. We need to always keep learning, and your attitude was perfect under criticism.

Hi Joe,

I agree with Sally - Under such strong criticism you handle yourself very well, and with a positive attitude!

While I feel his comments were a bit too strong it is good as a learning experiance like you say. If everyone was always overly positive about everything we did it wouldn't encourage us to learn half as much!

Keep on living, learning and enjoying life :)

Well, the original article was written by me - but please don't shoot me! Maybe you are right and I should have said why the widget isn't that good but don't you think people would get even more focused on it? I'll do it here so you can decide yourself.

The widget looses its appeal because of several facts. A widget should grab the attention within a flash and without requiring any "what am I looking at"-thoughts. And this is where you got it wrong. Your background is too 'busy' for your foreground. People only see a red paper-like texture, not the heart.
The sunburst is barely noticeable at first glance, it looks more of a fold. The sunburst is also the only thing on the image that is not aligned at the center. This can result in a "something is off"-feeling which you should prevent. And another note is the choice of your font, it doesn't work with 'Wildheart' making it almost impossible to read in 'the flash' I previously mentioned. Letters like i and l are very difficult for a small 125*125 image. An example: say without doing any effort the following sequence of numbers and letters out loud: 1Il1Il. Get my drift?
Anyway, nobody likes to get criticized but I must say you handled it very well. Keep learning, and remember: less is more (especially for a 125*125).

Wow thank you so much for this and taking the time to come to my blog to make additional comments and critiques. It felt good that you did this for me. I am also thankful that you pointed out what I did wrong I knew going into it that the design was sub par I was in a rush trying to get my Entrecard profile set up and honestly didn't think my design through enough.

The new design I took more time with and really thought about my purpose as well as who I was ideally trying to attract.

Seriously if there is something you feel I could be doing better let me know I am open to constructive criticism.
